The main focuses of the Progressive Tackle league are introducing young players to the fundamentals of tackle football, emphasizing skill development, teamwork, and safety in a fun and engaging environment.

Other leagues i.e. (NYFL) only require a minimum of 6 plays per half of each football game. This rule limits the opportunities for beginner/developing athletes. The PTFL does not have a minimum play requirement and encourages opportunities for all athletes to participate on gamedays. Typically, every PTFL athlete will play an equal number of plays on gamedays.
The main focuses of the Junior Varsity (JV) Football league are advancing player skills, introducing strategic aspects of the game, and preparing athletes for competitive play, while maintaining an emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Progressive Tackle:

  • Practices are held three days a week before the start of games.
  • Once games begin, practices are two days a week.
  • Practices are conducted at Scripps Middle School in Lake Orion.

Junior Varsity (JV):

  • Prior to the game season, practices are held four days a week.
  • During the game season, practices are reduced to three days a week.
  • Practices take place at Scripps Middle School in Lake Orion.

Progressive Tackle:

  • Games are primarily held on Sundays.
  • The regular season includes 6 games, with playoffs potentially adding up to two more.
  • The PTFL schedule will run in accordance with the JV schedule (see below).

Junior Varsity (JV):

  • Games for the JV league are typically on Saturdays.
  • The regular season consists of 7 games and up to 3 additional playoff games, all being played at various franchise fields including Lake Orion home field.
  • 2024 Regular season games: 8/24, 9/7, 9/14, 9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 10/19, with possible playoff dates occurring the following three weekends (playoffs may be scheduled on Saturdays or Sundays depending on hosting schools)

Specific field locations and times are usually communicated to participants closer to the game dates.

In the PTFL (progressive tackle) division (ages 8-9, with a 7-year-old waiver available). There are no weight restrictions. Our philosophy is to prepare the athlete for JV football and move him onto the next level when prepared.

For Junior Varsity (ages 10-11, with a rule for eligible 12-year-olds), the natural weight limit is 145 pounds, and 155 pounds for X Man players. With equipment, these are 152 and 162 pounds, respectively.

Special Exceptions:

  • 7-Year-Old Exception: 7-year-olds may play with a signed waiver
  • 12-Year-Old Exception: 12-year-olds entering 6th grade and not turning 13 before December 1 can play in the JV team, with a maximum of five such players per team.

X-Man Rules:

  • Two X-men are allowed per JV team
  • All plays must be on the line of scrimmage between the tackles
  • There is no restriction on the number of plays for an X-man
  • X-man are not allowed to carry the football on offense
  • X-man status must be declared at roster exchange and prior to gamedays during the season

No exceptions for other players exceeding the weight limit.
